The land of South Carolina was founded by English Settlers in 1670. This was a unique, aristocratic culture full of plantations and a wealthy society that participated in using black slave laborers. South Carolina was formed as one of the thirteen colonies and it was separated from the large land grant of the Carolina colony in 1729. The other portion was of course, named North Carolina. It was in South Carolina at the attack on Fort Sumter in the harbor at Charleston where the Civil War began. The state changed a lot when the war was over. For one, slavery was abolished and it was no longer an aristocratic society.

Today, South Carolina is becoming known for banking and research. The state tree is the cabbage palmetto which is why the state’s nickname is the “Palmetto State.” The palmetto is even depicted on the state flag. The state flower of South Carolina is the yellow Jessamine. South Dakota’s Capital used to be Charleston but it is now Columbia which is also the largest and most populated city in the state.
