California, also known as the “Golden State,” is the third largest U.S. state in area. Thousands of people immigrated into the area in 1849 to search for gold that had been discovered and this is what likely led to the state being admitted into the Union in 1850. The immigrants were known as the “Forty-Niners” which may sound familiar to pro football fans with the NFL team, the 49ers being based out of San Francisco. California is currently the most populated state in the United States and it is also the most important state for America’s agriculture.
