Myrtle Beach's Worst-Kept Secret: Bobbsy's
by Diane Goldberg
Psst! Hey, you want a real insider tip? You want to know where folks go when they're near the boardwalk, down by the sea, and they're craving a super sandwich, quick snack, or a cold one in unpretentious surroundings that stay the same?
Check out Bobbsy's Restaurant - just a short walk from the crowded burger bars and beer joints in downtown Myrtle Beach - for a real burger cooked to order or thick never-frozen fries (served with hot sauce if you like)
Bobbsy comes from a family of restaurant superstars. Her mom owns Bodo's, Myrtle Beach's premier German restaurant. Bobbsy's dad ran the restaurant before her. Bobbsy has been on North Ocean Boulevard in her little hole-in-the-wall location for 20 years (at least we hope she is still there--it's been a while since we hit Myrtle Beach).
She serves the best burgers in Myrtle Beach, and she'll refund your money if you are audacious enough to think otherwise. Her killer club sandwich has two cheeses, ham, turkey, bacon, and a generous portion of her specialty fries served with hot sauce. After a stroll on the beach, indulge in Bobbsy's bountiful breakfast - eggs, meat, hash browns, toast and constant coffee is a mere 3.95.
Bobbsy's customers are loyal returnees - the walls are full of photos of folks who drop in year after year. Postcards from all over the globe are tacked to the wall - greetings from Canada, Germany, and points near or far testify to the good times that go with her good burgers.
Golfing guests who frequent Bobbsy's after the sun tan seekers return home are wild about her homemade soups. Every day during the post- and pre-sun season a different soup simmers on the stove. Vegetable beef and chicken soup show up often. Bobbsy's special cream of broccoli soup is legendary. The low-fat corn chowder is so rich you'll swear that it can't possibly be low fat.
Happy hour hits daily from four to seven - beer is one dollar and wine a buck seventy-five a glass. Happy Hour ends at seven when Jeopardy comes on - soap opera is also spoken here.
The over thirty crowd will be comfortable knocking back a few cold ones at the tables or leaning on the bar catching up with the soaps while the kids hit the beach right outside the door. It's definitely not pretentious; probably the best bargain on the beach and certainly worth joining the ranks of the regulars at Bobbsy's. If people-watching is part of your favorite beach entertainment, grab a beer and a sandwich, and sit outside. The restaurant has tables fronting Ocean Boulevard and you can watch the crowds go by.
