The land that Oklahoma sits on was once only made available to Native Americans but they were forced to leave their home and native lands in 1889 when Congress decided to offer up 2 million acres of land to white settlers only. A number of land runs began at that time and many people had even already claimed their land and staked it before it was open to do so. These people were called “Sooners.” Oklahoma’s name is derived from two words of the Choctaw Indian tribe. “Okla” means people and “humma” means red. Oklahoma became the 46th state to enter the Union when it did so in 1907.

If you celebrate Christmas and have heard of the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe you are already familiar with the state flower. The state flower of Oklahoma is indeed the mistletoe, as well as the Oklahoma rose, and the state tree is the redbud. The largest and capital city of Oklahoma is Oklahoma City. Even though it is not a happy part of history, Oklahoma City is well known for the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
