North Carolina...
North Carolina was the 12th out of the original 13 colonies to become a state of the Union and it did so in 1789. The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island was the first European settlement to be established in North Carolina and it disappeared shortly after 1587. North Carolina is part of what was once a large land grant that King Charles I of England made. The land is even named after the Latin word for Charles which is Carolus. The other part of the land grant is of course the southern part, or South Carolina.

Tourism is one of the biggest industries in North Carolina with many people flocking to the Outer Banks beaches to enjoy the mild climate. Also, The “Tar Heel State” is home to the University of North Carolina and its popular Tar Heels sports teams that people come from all over to see first hand. The state flower is the dogwood and the state tree is the longleaf pine tree. The capital of North Carolina is Raleigh and the largest city is Charlotte.
