Montana is very large in size and is full of many rolling plains and this is why it is known as “Big Sky Country.” The first white explorers that ever set foot in that land that would become Montana were the well known members of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Montana finally became a state in 1889 and it was the 41st state to join the Union. This state gets its name from a Spanish word that means “mountainous.” The eastern part of the state is made up of those rolling plains and pastures but the western part is full of mountains that are part of the northern Rocky Mountains.

Montana is a popular tourist destination with its wide open fields and abundant streams filled with trout. In the past, Montana was known for its copper industry with the Anaconda Company. The bitterroot is the state flower and the state tree is the ponderosa pine. Helena is the capital of Montana and the largest city is Billings.
