Louisiana sits in an area of the United States known as the Deep South and it is also known as the “Pelican State.” This state was given the name Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV and it is very rich with history. As you tour the state, you can still see a lot of strong French influence. For example the French phrase for “red stick” is Baton Rouge, which also happens to be the name of the Capital of Louisiana. The city was given this name after Pierre Le Moyne d’lberville, a French-Canadian explorer, came to the area for a visit in 16999 and saw a red cypress post.

Today, New Orleans, another very popular tourist city in Louisiana is very rich with French influence. It is evident in the architecture, the name of some of the café’s such as Café Bignet, and in it’s annual Mardi Gras and jazz festivals.
